Malaysia Airlines’ (MAS) has managed to keep its safety record relatively clean over the last four years.
Flightglobal’s Ascend Online shows that the last recorded accident involving the airline was in 2010.
Between 1975 and 2010, MAS was involved in 18 accidents. Of these, four resulted in total aircraft losses.
The last fatal accident involving the carrier was in 1995. In this case, 32 passengers and two pilots on board a Fokker 50 were killed when the aircraft overshot the runway on landing at Tawau airport.
Investigatons later found that the captain’s “poor decision-making” was the main cause of the accident as he failed to follow standard operating procedures on landing.
Prior to this, the only other fatal accident involving MAS happened in 1977. A MAS Boeing 737 was apparently hijacked shortly after take-off from Penang and later crashed into a swamp in Johor. All 93 passengers and seven crew on board perished.
More recently, MAS’ regional arm MASwings recorded an accident last October when a Havilland Canada DHC-6 crashed near Kudat airport in Sabah. One pilot and one passenger were killed. The aircraft, registration 9M-MDM, was operating flight MH3002 from Kota Kinabalu to Kudat when the accident happened.
A range of Malaysian search and rescue assets have meanwhile been deployed off the coast of peninsular Malaysia to search for a missing MAS 777-200 aircraft. Flight 370 lost contact with Subang Air Traffic Control in Malaysia at around 02:40 local time on 8 March.
