Aermacchi's MB-339 trainer launched AIM-9L Sidewinder missiles for the first time as part of a test campaign at Salto di Quirra multi-service test range in Sardinia. The tests included four launches starting from a launch at the centre of the flight envelope, and gradually moving towards the high subsonic speed limit and manoevring up to 6g, simulating an operational mission. The Italian air force is carrying out the tests with the aim of proving the trainer can be used to face attack helicopters and other aircraft flying at low speed and altitude.
