The Malaysian Flying Academy (MFA) is expected to order two Robinson R22 two-seat helicopters this month to allow it to become the first provider of civil helicopter flight training in Malaysia.

Two more helicopters could follow, says Cliff Fournier, sales manager of Robinson's Malaysian distributor, Solaire Systems. MFA, which provides fixed-wing training to all Malaysia Airlines pilots, will receive the first cadet helicopter pilots at its Malacca Airport base in late April. The country's department of civil aviation has been keen to establish a rotorcraft training capability, as the Malaysian fire and police services currently send their helicopter pilots to Australia for training, says Fournier.

Meanwhile, Solaire is promoting the Robinson R44 to meet the police coastguard air wing's requirement for up to 12 helicopters to monitor Malaysia's coast for illegal immigrant movements, unlicensed fishing and piracy.

The R44 would be equipped with forward-looking infrared and video cameras. "For the price of one medium utility helicopter, you can buy at least five R44s," says Fournier.
