F-8
The F-8 Finback is once again the focus of a major upgrade programme, with Russian radar manufacturer Phazotron and missile manufacturer Vympel involved in the F-8 IIM project, unveiled in October 1995. A prototype first flew in 1996. Flight testing of the radar was expected to be complete by the end of 1997, but unspecified problems have seen this continue into 1998. The F-8II remains in production for the Chinese air force, replacing the F-8I in front-line units.
The F-8IIM was originally intended primarily for export, although the Chinese air force may also purchase the aircraft.
