MATRA MARCONI SPACE (MMS) has signed a contract with Orion Atlantic, part of Orion Network Systems, to build the Orion 2 communications satellite.
Orion has received $265 million of underwriting for the construction, launch and in-orbit insurance of the Orion 2, which will be launched by a Lockheed Martin Atlas booster in 1998.
The new 32 Ku-band transponder-satellite will join the MMS-built Orion 1 in providing transatlantic coverage.
