Following years of intense pressure from airlines, the operator of Tokyo’s Narita airport revealed during IATA’s annual meeting it would be slashing its landing charges which were among the highest in the world.

Narita International Airport Corp (NAA) says its new charging regime will see landing fees cut by between 10% and 31%, depending on the type of aircraft operated. Instead of a flat landing fee of ¥2,400 ($22) per tonne, charges will be based upon the Airports Council International’s Aircraft Noise Rating Index. Aircraft with the quietest Category A rating, such as Airbus A340s and some Boeing 777s, will be charged at ¥1,650 per tonne.

New charges will be applied, however, for the use of boarding bridges, arrival baggage handling and aircraft parking. IATA is studying what it describes as a complicated proposal, but has agreed to consult with NAA. “While there are decreases in the landing charge, there are significant increases elsewhere,” says IATA. The intention is to adopt the charges in October.
