Honeywell's Ovation Select cabin management system, which is aimed at offering an onboard experience on a par or better than the digital systems in people's own homes, has been certified by the US FAA and is now flying on the manufacturer's Dassault Falcon 900EX business aircraft.
The modular and flexible cabin management system provides component command and control, crystal-clear surround sound audio, vivid full high-definition (1080p) video and digital distribution throughout the cabin, which "can be tailored to any business or entertainment need", according to Honeywell.
Significantly, Ovation Select is the first certified cabin management system that incorporates digital rights media authorization from major movie studios. In order to receive these key approvals, Honeywell had to show how Ovation Select protects the high-definition content so that when it is transmitted through the network, "nobody can copy it and then redistribute it in an unauthorized fashion", Honeywell business leader cabin management systems, business and general aviation Paul Lafata told Flight Evening News during a press flight to NBAA on board the company's Falcon 900EX.
With Ovation Selection, accessing and controlling the total cabin environment is accomplished through enhanced icon-based, touch-screen interfaces. Controlling the system's entertainment and productivity components, Ovation Select also puts lighting, seats, temperature, galley and window shade controls at the passengers' fingertips.
Honeywell has also incorporated digital interfaces needed to connect high-speed satellite communications with the latest consumer electronics, "enabling passengers to simply carry on their personal devices and plug them in for in-flight use", said Honeywell.
At present, five green Boeing Business Jets are going through completion with the system. A Boeing 777 is also to be fitted, and Embraer "is certifying it on Legacy 500 and 450 aircraft", said Lafata.
