Saft is highly charged about the Paris airshow this year - and has the batteries to prove it.

The company (Chalet 352) is taking the opportunity to unveil its new rechargeable nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cd) batteries, based on Saft's ultra-low maintenance (ULM) technology, which has already been incorporated into more than 6000 new generation aircraft.

The new range of batteries is designed to reduce life cycle cost without compromising safety, performance or reliability. They deliver a full year of operation, without maintenance, while providing a high-performance on-board battery with excellent power and higher energy density.

High energy

ULM batteries are interchangeable with standard products and can be retrofitted to most aircraft without expensive airframe modifications. There is seldom a need to change electrical system or maintenance procedures.

Since its launch in 1995, ULM technology has entered service on a host of aircraft including Airbus, Boeing, Bombadier Global Express, Eurocopter and Gulfstream.

Also on display are Saft's super-high-power lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries, adapted for aerospace applications. The Li-ion battery features high energy and power density. Its could save more than 50% of the weight of an equivalent Ni-Cd battery.
