The Royal Air Force of Oman (RAFO) has placed a major contract with Alenia Marconi Systems to upgrade its Integrated Air Defence System.

This significant order is for the supply of state-of-the-art long-range radars along with Control and Reporting Centres and an associated communications network.

The contract continues a partnership which began more than 20 years ago. In the mid 1970s, Marconi supplied the RAFO with its first air defence radar system. In the intervening years Marconi has not only supplied additional radars but also Command and Control Systems to complement them, including a comprehensive communications network to integrate the various elements.

Over the entire period the RAFO has been operating the Marconi-supplied Air Defence System, while Marconi has been providing support services at a number of operational sites throughout the Sultanate.

The Company has recently established a training centre to enable RAFO technicians to become skilled in maintaining complex electronic systems.
