Alan Mulally, president of the Boeing Commercial Airplanes Group, conceded at the Paris air show that he expects the value of airliner orders this year to be at only 60-70% of 1998 levels and stay at around that mark in 2000. Initially, confusion reigned as journalists understood him to have predicted a 70% collapse, prompting Boeing to circulate a clarification. Airbus then, too confirmed that a 30-40% decline was likely, bringing orders back in line with 1996 after the heady volumes of the last two years.
