Senior members of Argentina's and Chile's air forces stressed the importance of regional collaboration between their countries to bolster South America's defence capabilities, particularly when it comes to humanitarian and peace-keeping duties.

Speaking at the US pavilion yesterday, General Jorge Dicoli, material commander of the Argentinian air force, said: "There are a lot of projects going on to make an integration of our defence forces."

Work and investment is under way at present with the aim of operational teams being deployed from 2010 if required, he said. "We will start in the area of community help for disasters under the flag of the United Nations," he said, as well as in fast reaction forces for peace-keeping duties, also under the direction of the UN. There is also work going on in IT co-operation and integration.
