Pakistan International Airlines(PIA) has confirmed that none of its operational fleet suffered any damage during the 9 June terrorist raid at Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport.
While there were some PIA aircraft parked near the fighting between Pakistani security forces and the Pakistani Taliban infiltrators, the spokesman says these aircraft “were beyond economic repair” and not even under a maintenance regime at the time of the attack.
Still, the carrier plans to assess the damage to the parked aircraft and produce a report on the matter.
After the attack, an image emerged on social media that appeared to show damage to the right side of a Boeing 747-300 aircraft.
The image shows two large holes in the fuselage just above the windows on the lower deck, and just below the upper deck emergency exit. The holes appear too large to have been made by bullets, and there is a great deal of scarring around the edges.
According to Flightglobal’s Ascend Online database,PIA has four 747-300s, of which three are in storage. The Rolls-Royce RB211 powered aircraft, which were formerly operated by Cathay Pacific Airways, have 503 economy class seats, rendering them suitable for pilgrimage flights.
