Qantas’s 75th Boeing 737-800 has arrived in Sydney, sporting a unique retro livery.
The design harks back to the airline’s colour scheme from the 1970s, including the winged kangaroo tail motif, which was replaced with the simplified Flying Kangaroo in 1984.

“For 70 years this familiar kangaroo on the tail has represented not just our airline but also the best of Australia and a sense of home for those who have seen it at airports around the world,” says Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce.
The 737, registered VH-XZP, has been named in honour of James Strong, who was the airline’s chief executive between 1993 and 2001. Strong later served on the airline’s board until his death last year.
“Qantas aircraft are traditionally named after Australian places, with the exception of our fleet of A380s, which are named for Australian aviation pioneers. We’re very proud to break with tradition to name this aircraft James Strong – another great leader of the Australian aviation industry,” Joyce adds.
