Samoa's Polynesian Blue has repaid 9 million tala ($3.6 million) to the Samoan Government for its initial investment in the airline in 2005.

The amount includes a special dividend from the carrier's operations during the 2009 fiscal year, says Polynesian Blue.

"The airline has gone from strength to strength so we are honoured to be in a position to give back to Samoa," says Virgin Blue Airlines group CEO and co-founder Brett Godfrey.

The airline posted a net profit of NZ$880,000 ($637,000) for the fiscal year ended 30 June.
