Samoa plans to privatise flag carrier Polynesian Airlines because of losses and the economic slowdown in key markets.

The government is prepared to sell up to 49% to foreign investors, says prime minister Tuila'epa Sailele. Talks are said to be underway with interested parties.

Ministers want to ensure control of the airline stays in Samoan hands as it is considered crucial to tourism. After a disastrous foray into the US market in 1994, Polynesian was profitable until 2000.
