Australia’s Qantas Airways has named mining executive Leigh Clifford as the successor to chairman Margaret Jackson who is to retire from the post in November this year.
Clifford stepped down from his post as the chief executive of mining firm Rio Tinto, which has head offices in Australia and the UK, in April this year.
He is to become a non-executive director on the Qantas board immediately.
Jackson opted to step down as chairman following a failed takeover bid for the Oneworld alliance carrier by private equity group Airline Partners Australia.
She had strongly supported the takeover attempt which collapsed after struggling to secure shareholder acceptance.
