Qantas expects a small rise in profits above the A$263 million ($146 million) it posted for the year to June 1997, much of which came from a A$563 million cost-cutting programme. Managing director James Strong said at the end June that the carrier had secured a further A$500 million in cost savings in 1997/8, ensuring it would at least match last year's profit when results are announced in August.
