"It associates us even more closely with the world's No 1 helicopter manufacturer," says spokesman Radu Stefan.

Eurocopter Romania will ultimately carry out major manufacturing and final assembly of the twin-engined EC 135 helicopter.

The company is 51% owned by Eurocopter, with the balance held by IAR Brasov.

Other roles include maintenance, repair and overhaul of the Eurocopter range, marketing of these types in Romania and in neighbouring countries such as Bulgaria and Hungary, spares and other support for the Alouette and Puma legacy types, and Puma refurbishment and upgrades.

IAR Brasov is already seeing success: the national police are to receive three EC135s, and the company is optimistic that an emergency medical services programme with the ministry of health will be launched.
