The Romanian air force is offering its last 18 Mikoyan MiG-29 Fulcrums for sale. Air force chief of staff Lt Gen Gheorghe Catrina says the fighters will be sold rather than modernised to NATO standards. Catrina also says the air force will replace 100 Elbit-modernised MiG-21 Lancers between 2008 and 2012 with 48 new fighters. This comes more than seven years after the US Department of Defense announced that Romania intended to buy 12 Lockheed Martin F-16s or Boeing F/A-18s and nine Lockheed Martin C-130s.
