Russia’s air traffic control and airspace management system is set for an overhaul designed to consolidate its civil and military sectors.

A decree signed by President Vladimir Putin orders the establishment of a special agency solely responsible for managing the country’s air traffic.

This new federal aeronautical agency will be directly subordinate to the government and will take over from air traffic control departments within the transport and defence ministries.

Its functions will include airspace regulation, control and oversight as well as responsibility for search-and-rescue arrangements.
