The Russian Government has decided to privatise Domodedovo Commercial Aviation Enterprise, which runs Moscow's main domestic airport and the Domodedovo airline operation. Anew public company, Domodedovo Service, will be set up to run the airport, which handled close to 6 million passengers in 1995, although a majority 51% will stay in state hands for three years.

The Domodedovo Airlines operation, which had been controlled by the airport under the old Soviet regime, will now be a separate company. The state will initially retain a 25.5%stake in the carrier, which will take over ownership of the aircraft fleet and maintenance base at the airport. Other airport operations which cannot be privatised under Russian law will be transferred to a wholly state-owned Domodedovo Airport Administration.

The privatisation is in line with the policy outlined earlier this year by Russia's transport ministry to begin selling off main airports.
