Russia's Rosaviakosmos space agency has told Brazil it is interested in working with the South American country to upgrade the Alcantara equatorial satellite launch site.

The move comes as Russia continues to face political hurdles with its plans to fly Soyuz boosters from Arianespace's Kourou, French Guiana, launch centre.

Brazil is keen to create a launch site that could provide access to geostationary orbit (GEO) in competition with Arianespace's Kourou centre - but its plans are being thwarted by US pressure. Upgrading the South American site could cost up to $2 million.

Industry analysts also question whether there is a big enough market for GEO launches to justify any more sites.
