Saab Dynamics and Bodenseewerk Gerätetechnik (BGT) of Germany have signed a memorandum of understanding to offer jointly the Swedish company's RBS15 Mk3 anti-ship missile system to the German navy.

Under the deal, BGT will lead German industrial participation in the RBS15 should the system be selected by the country, which requires a weapon to equip its K-130 corvettes. Germany plans to acquire around 15 of the ships, although the timing of their entry into service remains uncertain because of budgetary constraints.

The RBS15 is also being offered for Royal Swedish Navy Visby-class ships and, in the longer term, Germany's planned F-125 frigates.

Saab and BGT co-operate within the IRIS-T air-to-air missile consortium, and say they are studying ways of harmonising Sweden and Germany's future requirement for an advanced, long-range, anti-ship missile with a land-attack capability.
