Seoul's Incheon International Airport has signed an agreement with Korean low-cost carrier Jeju Air to develop the airline's own maintenance hangar.
The 21,700 square metre hangar will be built at a cost of 21 billion Korean won ($18 million) and will open in December 2012, says the airport.
It will be used for line and heavy maintenance, says Incheon airport. Jeju already performs its own line maintenance, but heavy maintenance has been done by others overseas, adds the airport.
"Once the maintenance hangar has been completed, it is expected that Jeju Air will offer more stable flight schedules," says the airport.
The airport also plans to develop an 800,000 square metre aircraft maintenance complex in an effort to persuade more airlines to send more aircraft to Incheon, says the airport.
It will offer space in the complex to companies who want to set up maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services, it says.
"We are not planning to own maintenance facilities, we will just provide our real estate to business agents which want to operate MRO facilities," says an airport spokeswoman.
The complex will provide MRO services for domestic and foreign airlines, especially low-cost carriers, she adds.
