A second passenger terminal and runway will open at Shanghai Hongqiao Airport on 16 March.

The new facilities passed checks conducted by a team from the Civil Aviation Administration of China from 2 to 3 March, says the Shanghai Airport Authority.

Construction of the 362,600 square metre terminal building and new runway started almost three years ago, says the authority.

The new facilities are part of an expansion program to boost the capacity of the airport, which serves mostly domestic flights.

By 2015, the airport should be able to handle 40 million passengers a year, and 1 million tones of cargo and 300,000 aircraft movements, says the airport authority.

Together with the Shanghai Pudong Airport, the two airports can handle 100 million passengers, 5.2 million tonnes of cargo and 790,000 aircraft movements a year, it adds.
