United Space Alliance (USA), the Boeing-Lockheed Martin company which operates the Space Shuttle for NASA, has been given responsibility for the assembly, test and refurbishment of the solid rocket boosters in an effort to consolidate Shuttle programme operations. The work had previously been conducted by USBI. USA is completing its third year as the Shuttle operator under a six-year, $7 billion contract.
