Last week's image shows mission specialist Guion Bluford and other
STS-8/Challenger astronauts emerging from the transport cages that would take them to safety during an emergency.  This exercise was done in preparation for the launch on 30 August 1983 from Kennedy Space Centre's launch complex pad 39A.  The slidewire, which extends from the level of the Orbiter Access Arm, provides an escape route for the crew aboard the Space Shuttle up until the final 30s of the countdown.
