CAE has announced the first customer for its new Brazilian flight training centre. Transportes Aereos Regionais (TAM) has signed a long-term contract for Airbus A320 and Fokker 100 training at the São Paulo centre, set to open in the second quarter of 2001.

CAE says it has signed memoranda of understanding with two additional airlines and is pursuing opportunities with other carriers in Latin America.

The centre will be equipped with four CAE-built simulators. All will use the Canadian company's MaxVue Plus visual system and work is under way with TAM to collect the photo-altimetric data required to build visual databases for airports served by the airline.

CAE's military simulation business unit, meanwhile, has announced contracts exceeding C$50 million ($35 million). These include a third Raytheon T-6A flight training device for the Bombardier-run NATO Flying Training in Canada programme, and an upgrade of a Royal Netherlands Navy Lockheed P-3C operational flight trainer.

The P-3C will be fitted with a five-channel MaxVue Plus and new motion system and upgraded with a Level D-standard aerodynamic data package. The objective of the upgrade is to allow the navy to reduce flying training to preserve its aircraft for operational use.
