Thailand and the USA have agreed an open-skies air services bilateral allowing for unlimited flights between the two countries, writes Nicholas Ionides.

An open-skies accord covering cargo flights was agreed in 2003, removing restrictions on frequency, aircraft types and pricing. The new agreement extending to passenger services was reached ahead of a visit by Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra to the USA later this month.

“The agreement with Thailand will significantly modernise US-Thai aviation relations by allowing airlines from the two countries to make commercial decisions with minimal government intervention,” says the US Department of State.
