The AAIB investigators found that other airports - Stockholm Arlanda, Sweden, and Houston and La Guardia airports in the USA - have areas subject to magnetic anomalies, and that virtually no research has been done on the precise causes and what can mitigate them. The first AAIB recommendation in the report is that the International Civil Aviation Organisation "should amend Annex 14 [airport standards] to highlight the importance of ensuring that no airport infrastructure is allowed to alter significantly the local earth's magnetic field density in areas where aircraft hold prior to departure".
