Touchpad strapped to pilot's leg allows software updates without need for retrofits

EADS Systems & Defence Electronics has developed a portable tactical information system intended to upgrade fighters and helicopters without requiring a permanent modification to the aircraft. The system is on trial on French navy Dassault Super Etendards and has been acquired for French army special forces helicopters.

The Mobitrack tactical information system features an integrated mission planning function and a moving map, with ground collision and obstacle warning mode. It is available as the Fightacs for combat aircraft and Helitacs for helicopters. The system is contained in a touchpad strapped to the pilot's leg in place ofa traditional kneepad.

"This portable retrofit means that nothing needs to be changed in the aircraft," says Joel Berges, product director. "There is just a cable to interface with the databases of the aircraft systems which disconnects automatically in case the pilot ejects," he adds.

Fightacs allows upgrade of fighters such as the Dassault Mirage F1, Northrop F-5, McDonnell Douglas A-4 Skyhawk and F-4 Phantom "as well as all Russian fighters... at between five and 10 times less than the cost of a normal retrofit", says Berges. In addition, the retrofit can be achieved without sidelining the aircraft for more than a few days.

The system provides navigation information using internal or external GPS satellite navigation and/or the aircraft's systems.
