Airbus Military has awarded UK defence and aerospace supplier Ultra Electronics (Stand 544, Hall A) a contract worth more than £35 million ($61 million) to supply active noise and vibration control for the A400M military transport.
Ultra’s Tuned Vibration Absorber System (TVAS) is designed to work in the cargo bay, protecting troops and crew members from the exceptionally high levels of noise created by the aircraft’s turboprops.
TVAS is based on active devices attached to the fuselage to yield local reductions in vibration. A central electronic controller co-ordinates the devices to minimise the total noise entering the cargo bay. TVAS is based on active and semi-active technology developed by Ultra over more than 20 years and in operational service on more than 800 turboprops. Ultra is also developing a similar noise-reduction solution for airliner cabins in collaboration with UK technology company Qinetiq.
TVAS will be applied to the four A400Ms ordered by Malaysia as part of a programme that now totals 192 aircraft. The A400M’s first flight is scheduled for 2008 and first deliveries for 2009.
