United Airlines became the first US flag carrier to serve post-war Vietnam with Boeng 747-400 flights from San Francisco to Ho Chi Minh City, the former Saigon, via Hong Kong. The last flight by a US carrier departed as Saigon was about to fall in 1975. The daily service is a consquence of a new bilateral pact between the two countries signed in late 2003.
