THE VENEZUELAN armed forces are planning to buy a fleet of 18 Russian Mil Mi-8 and Mi-17 transport helicopters.

The helicopters, formerly in service with the Russian armed forces, are to be sold via a Polish intermediary, and will have some Polish avionics fitted.

The unnamed Polish company had already been involved in selling battlefield equipment to the Venezuelan army, when Venezuela expressed an interest in helicopter purchases.

A Polish delegation was scheduled to travel to the country at the end of August to negotiate the contract.

The first helicopter could be sent to Poland for refitting within two months of the contract being signed, before it is delivered to the customer.
