Western Sky Industries owners Dan Desai and Burn Oberwager got one of their best-ever birthday presents - an acquisition.

Their US-based company, which numbers Boeing and Airbus among its major customers, manufactures engineered systems and components for new aircraft and the after market.

It now has a European manufacturing base in Belgium with the purchase of Tyee Aircraft and its subsidiary Technical Airborne Components (TAC).

"We shook hands on the deal on Dan's birthday and signed and sealed it on mine," says Burn, who announced the news on the first day of Asian Aerospace '98.

"The combination makes Western Sky a more significant supplier to its customers at a time when they are trying to reduce their total number of vendors and are demanding more complete systems. You either consolidate or go out of business."

The company, appearing at the show (Stand D205) for the first time, isn't discounting either diversification or further acquisitions to provide a more complete service.

Robert Levine, aerospace and defence senior vice-president, says: "We are very excited about the acquisition. It's a perfect fit.
