WestJet is working with Canada's transport ministry to obtain certification for 180min extended twin-engine operations (ETOPS) to allow it to start operating its Boeing Next Generation 737s on longer routes such as Halifax-London or Vancouver-Hawaii. If the review by Transport Canada goes well, the Calgary, Alberta-based airline will in September examine more closely the possibility of operating its 737-700s and -800s on routes as long as 6h over the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, says WestJet. The carrier's 18 older 737-200s will be retired "within a year", says WestJet.
