-Sabreliner's Dimension Aviation division at Phoenix Goodyear has begun heavy maintenance checks on the first of up to four FedEx McDonnell Douglas DC-10s. Maintenance and modifications will be carried out before the aircraft are converted to freighters.

-Air India is reportedly opening up its recently completed R216 million ($5 million) engine maintenance and overhaul shop at Mumbai for third party work, to boost revenues. The plant specialises in overhauling the Pratt & Whitney PW4000 and has the capacity for up to 12 engines at once.

-Mesaba Airlines, which operates as a Northwest Airlink affiliate, is constructing an aircraft maintenance hangar at its Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International base. The $13 million facility will be used to maintain Avro RJ85s, and will be able to accommodate up to six aircraft. The maintenance centre is due to open before the end of 1999.

-GAMCO has completed the painting of the first two of three Airbus A310-300s for Emirates in its new dedicated paint facility at Abu Dhabi.

-Kelowna Flightcraft is installing Duganair Technologies Stage 3 Quiet Wing System packages on three Boeing 727-200s operated by Sunworld International Airlines.

-SAS has awarded AlliedSignal Aerospace a three-year contract for maintenance, repair and overhaul of the airline's 131-9 auxiliary power units which equip its Boeing 737-600s and MD-90s.

-Continental Airlines has contracted its partner, Northwest, to undertake Pratt & Whitney JT8D maintenance at its Atlanta, Georgia, facility.

-Spanish airline Air Europa has selected FLS Aerospace to provide component support for its new Next Generation Boeing 737. The contract is worth £18 million ($30 million) over eight years. The first of the new aircraft will enter service in April. The UK-based third party maintenance company will also undertake heavy maintenance on Air Europe's current 737 fleet
