GREATEST ENGINE

WINNER ROLLS-ROYCE MERLIN

During the Battle of Britain, the unmistakable sound of the Merlin engine was heard daily across the south of England as the RAF engaged Luftwaffe fighters in dogfights. Accepting the award, Rolls-Royce's chief test pilot Phill O'Dell paid tribute to the famous engine, which powered not only the Spitfire, but the Hurricane, Lancaster, Mosquito and P-51 Mustang. No engine was more crucial to the war effort. To mark the 100 Greatest award for the Spitfire and the Merlin, the engine manufacturer parked its own restored Mk XIX Spitfire, PS853, outside the TAG facility.
