After asking for administrative leave following a drunk driving arrest on 3 December, Federal Aviation Administration head Randy Babbitt has submitted his resignation and it as been accepted by the Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood.

"Serving as FAA Administrator has been an absolute honour and the highlight of my professional career," said Babbitt. "But I am unwilling to let anything cast a shadow on the outstanding work done 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by my colleagues at the FAA."

Babbitt was named administrator in 2009 and after his leave of absence was granted on 5 December agency deputy administrator Michael Huerta was named acting administrator.
