Bahrain Airport Services is expecting a "big demand" among school-leavers for a UK-endorsed aeronautical engineering training programme that is recognised as an entry qualification for university.

BAS's engineering centre will from February provide higher national diplomas recognised by training authority Edexcel, and claims to be only the second organisation in the Middle East to do so.

"This allows us to really step up what we can offer as it adds a lot of value to the qualification, allowing students to go on to study for a bachelors degree, for instance," said Khalid Al-Bastaki, senior manager for training and development.

BAS has graduated around 250 engineering technicians since launching its centre seven years ago and is currently training around 120 students.
