CHINA Official newspaper China Daily says after a dismal 2008 Chinese airlines made a cumulative first quarter profit of 800 million yuan ($116 million) on the back of a rebound in domestic travel, tax cuts, government cash injections and lower fuel prices. The government, pointing to a 17.9% rise in first quarter domestic passenger numbers, says carriers can earn a profit for the year, although international passenger and cargo demand is down on 2008.

CARGOLUX The Luxembourg-based freight operator is to pay a $119 million fine for participating in a cartel involving fuel surcharges, under a plea bargain reached with the US Department of Justice. The fine will be paid over five years as part of the deal, which follows a long-running inquiry into several international freight carriers. "We have co-operated intensively with the...investigation and will continue to do so," says chairman Marc Hoffmann.
