COST-CUTTERS While British Airways looked like plunging into industrial strife over pensions, Japan Airlines secured 90% approval for a proposed 50% cut to the pensions of its 17,000 current employees and mailed pension reduction consent forms to 8,800 former employees after a survey indicated 5,700 would accept cuts. An individual pensioner's reduction could be up to 30%. And, six former executives have agreed to return part of their retirement benefits.

WALLOP BHUKKANASUT Thai Airways is probing allegations that its executive chairman did not pay for about 260kg (570lb) of excess luggage on a flight from Tokyo Narita to Bangkok. According to various media reports, Bhukkanasut and his wife allegedly failed to pay for the excess luggage, and routed it through a special channel to avoid paying taxes and fees. The scandal has resulted in calls from the public for Bhukkanasut to resign from the flag carrier.
