Good week

Sir Richard Branson

RICHARD BRANSON UK newspaper reports have Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways interested in taking a stake in - or even taking over - the iconic entrepreneur's Virgin Atlantic operation, currently the subject of a strategic review by Deutsche Bank. Neither side is commenting, but Etihad, which if nothing else has lots of money and awesome ambition, is said to have contacted DB. Branson owns 51% of Virgin Atlantic, with Singapore Airlines holding the rest.

Bad week

ATLANTIC HARMONY With the World Trade Organisation set to rule on Europe's complaint of illegal US subsidies to Boeing, Brussels approved a €129 million ($177 million) Spanish government loan to Aernnova for Airbus A350 tailplane development, with an assumed subsidy of €37.4 million Aernnova would have paid in bank interest. The Americans may wonder when Airbus parent EADS plans to spend some of €10 billion cash it has accumulated.
