Ford Aerospace is demonstrating the non-metallic laminate shim stock Plasipeel.
Plasipeel is made up of multiple layers of wafer-thin material that is bonded and pressed together so as to adopt the same characteristics as a solid material. It can then be cut, punched, or machined to make shim components.
The benefit of Plasipeel is that these layers can then be peeled away until the desired thickness is achieved, said Ford Aerospace.
Ford Aerospace, in association with Newcastle University, developed the product and expects full production to begin in August 2011.
